Final Front Cover Draft
This above is my first design of my final music magazine front cover. The things I feel like I need to improve on is the font style and my font colouring. My reasons behind this is because I think that my font styles and colours are not following conventions from other magazines from the same genres. I feel like the font does not look professional enough to be seen for example on to be stall stands. On the other hand the way I have presented the text on my front cover I am pleased with as it does follow the conventions of a front cover magazine, so from this I will aim not to change the set out of my text. I have placed my barcode and the rest of the necessary information on the bottom right hand corner. If you look through a lot of magazines you will find that they are placed there. I have placed it there so people know where to find the prices. I have placed the text above my masthead and this is called a skyline. This will attract the audience as it engages the reader by them seeing that it is the worlds best dance magazine.

Colour Scheme and Font Collage
This above is my colour scheme and my font ideas. There is only one colour scheme in the background and the reason for this is that I already have chosen my background colours and I will keep them throughout my magazine. And this will create synergy. I have many font types with my music magazine title/name on this collage. The reason for this is because I am still undecided on what font type I want to use as my masthead, on my front cover and throughout my whole magazine. The one I am most likely to use and swaying towards the most it the 'Bosher' in the middle right hand side of the photo. The reason for this is in my opinion this font type stands out the most from the rest, and expanding on that if it is the font that stands out that is good as I want my magazine to stand out from the rest so that people will buy it. The reason I think it stands out is because it it differnt style compared to the rest, as the font get smaller in the middle and bigger at the ends. Sort of the oppisite of the doplar effect. I will most likely have this font and if I do I might change the colours round, for example have a black text fill and yellow outline and then a black glow if I decide to have one.

Final Flat Plan
I have changed changed my magazine name from 'Kosher' to 'Bosher'. The reason in this is that I found out that kosher is related to Jews and Jewish meat, so from this I found it inappropriate to have this as my masthead. I have placed the masthead there because it is most effective if it at least 1/5 of the page. Able enough to grab the audiences attention and make them pick up this magazine rather than any other magazine. I have placed a skyline on my front cover because in my opinion it adds to the selling point of the magazine as when people will see it, they will think to themselves that this is a brilliant magazine and will persuade them upon purchase. Therefore I would be making more sales. The target audience would find this eye catching and appealing. The main image I have drawn up is basically the same image as the image I used in my proposal. The photo of Kid Cudi smoking whist not having direct gaze with the reader. With not having direct gaze with the reader this lets the reader think to themselves what are they hiding. Makes them want to read on and that is what you want from a front cover. In this photo the key prop will be the cigarette. Since he is smoking, smoking not only is related to dance music but when a artist smokes they are automatically given the 'bad boy' label. And a lot of music dance artists like to have the bad boy label. Makes them different from the rest of the artists in the world. So in a sense this sort of thing relates to indie music. The sell lines are placed to the right hand side of the main image. The reason for this is that this is where sell lines are most effective in my opinion. Just placed in the middle of the front cover so the reader is bound to see them, and if the main article doesnt persaude the audience to buy the magazine. A sell line will placed in the correct place and have a good content.
This is the final flat plan for my real music magazine, Bosher.
And this is the contents page. The main image you see on the right hand side is taken up nearly one half of the page. The reason behind this is that this will be one of my other articles and the person that I take a close up of will be pulling a blank expression, no smiling or posing. Just staring at the camera and having direct gaze with it. Therefore when the audience looks upon this it will engage the reader into wanting to expand on that certain article. I do not have the headline above the image because I want all that space to be that certain person and only him in that. No words, I think that this will make the image more effective. I do not have the issue date and the issue number on the contents page as I think that they are more effective and not needed when they are already on the front cover. I have placed the contents title in the same place as the masthead on the front cover. I have done this becasue people will know what page they are on and where to find the articles they want to read. I have the subheadings 'Exclusive', 'Regular Features' and 'This week only' and people will be able with this, to again locate where the articles are and it will make it easier and faster to get around my magazine.

Second Attempt Front Cover
This above is my second attempt at creating a front cover on photoshop, even-though I have been on photoshop at least four times I am still finding it hard and being incapable of producing a good front cover/contents page. Above is just a basic front cover and where things should be placed if I had done a real one. For my real front cover for my magazine I might use this layout and it is sufficient in what is doing and it looks professional. Comparing this to my first attempt of a front cover with Jarvis Cocker this looks, in my opinion, a lot better. My thinking behind this is that there is no silly background colours and that there is more information on this one compared to the Jarvis Cocker one.

Considerable Photographical Images
I feel like this photo will be a good photo to be on my front cover and the reason for this is that since my music magazine's target audience majority of them is male and students.
This is what could have been in for my front cover images. In fact these images maybe are more suitable for my front cover compared to the half naked female. |
This photo above and below are ones that are in contention to part of my contents page, although I could have them both on my contents page but the only problem in doing this is having them both smaller and that means that the readers will have to go into more depth so that they can see them clearly. I feel like if a picture is bigger it is ,in theory, more productive. The dress sense on the group below Clean Bandit, follows the conventions of my dress sense code in my magazine. Although the group above, Chase and Status, do not wear exactly the dress sense code for my magazine, which is young and fashionable, Chase is wearing a Fred Perry polo top which does link in with my code. In the photo of Clean Bandit they all have direct gaze with the audience, this shows that they have confidence and shows one part of the two paradoxes where the audiecne feels like they can connect with the artists. Chase and Status have direct gaze with the reader as well so the conventions are the same as Clean Bandit's.
This is what could have been in my double page spread as well as they two photos above. I feel like I wanted to add a range of photos so when I do choose what to have I could look back and think which one is best.Tuesday, 15 October 2013
Institutional Research Part 2
I feel like the one that relates mostly and best to my magazine is Bauer Media and Future Publishing. The reason in my thinking is that they do a lot of music genre magazines comparing to the rest of the magazine industries where they can really only do one or two genres for example EMAP and Conde Nast where they only really do like female magazines and/or fashion magazine. Even though inside my magazine I will be having some fashion within my magazine. The rest of the magazine institutions I feel like are not suitable to my magazine itself.

College Magazine
This is the final contents page for my college magazine. I have followed the layout of my flat plan in majority of cases, apart from the lines, in my flat plan they are curved and again my inexperience in photoshop cost me in my magazine not following the same conventions as my flat plan, but that is all. I have my photo of the male holding two objects up and not having direct gaze with the reader, he is also in the correct position and with all the right text there, and the headline placed directly above him, this informs the reader what the headline is and where they will find it. I feel like there is to much deadspace within in my contents page, and this could not be avoided as I could not do curved lines I had to fit all the stories within the odd amount of space, and then there was not a sufficient amount of space for anymore stories. And if I did decide to put more stories on there I feel like it would have been to cramped and would appear to unprofessional and untidy. The same font style as my front cover follows the conventions of having synergy throughout the contents page and will be easier for my reader to feel connected to the magazine and easier to understand/read.

Research and Planning of Preliminary Task
In this front cover I have used the colours green and blue. The reason for this is that I did not have a black and yellow felt tip pen, so for this imagine the colours on here to be black and yellow. The reason I have used these colours are because they are bright and they contrast, this connotes that the college is a bright and happy friendly environment to be in. The image I have used is a college student that is got books upon his lap showing that he is studying hard, the books would a 'key prop' which means it is the most important prop on the page. The facial expression of the student is a black expression as he was not confident in front of the camera. As he does not have direct gaze. This shot is classed as a medium close up with only his face and shoulders in the shot. The setting of the shot will be in college as it is a college magazine. One of my articles is a article about how good the results are here. So I used a pun which is also a rhetorical question. This would drag readers into this and will be eager to read on. The sell lines would be that I am giving away free revision guides with this issue and how to get the latest coursework handbook.
For my contents page I did this at home so I had the colours to do my colour scheme correctly. Another reason I choose these two colours for my colour scheme is that it will help me for my real dance magazine, give me some practise for the real thing. The images used are the same as person as my front cover, but this time he is holding up two grades, but since I could not get actual grades to get the student to hold. So I got the student to hold up two other pieces of paper. The text I have used is just subheadings that explain the articles them self. I would class where the it tells you what page the article is on, and "don't miss" would be key words because they are words that not only inform people where to find the articles there want to read are, but what is not to miss, a key word it informs people what is important. I have not placed my logo or my slogan in the contents page because I feel like the slogan can only be on the front cover, whereas I forgot to put the logo on so that is why you can not see it. The layout is easy to understand for the reader, easy to understand because there is three big sections for the three biggest stories, so that will be where the main stoires will be and that is what attracts the reader. The main artcile and the sell lines. If I was to develop my magazine and change anything if I wore to do this again I would add my logo on both front cover and contetns page. I would also add the features section at the bottom of the contents page. Lastly I would also double check to make sure that there was no deadspace, although there is not much on my conents page I feel like there is to much on my front cover.

Charts of My Target Audience Results
I carried out a survey with some members of my target audience, mainly being males but I also asked females as my magazines target audience is not all males, the reason for this is to collect qualitative data on what my readers would like to see on my music magazine and how much they would be willing to pay for my magazine.
From this pie chart above this has told me that the majority of my target audience would pay between £2-£2.99 for a music magazine therefore my price for my magazine will be in between these price ranges.
From this pie chart above I have found out that that these responses have told me that people would like to see Black and Yellow colour scheme throughout my magazine. The reason for this I am thinking is that when you normally think of dance music you think of clubs and raves. When at these events it is normally dark and you associate glow sticks and bright lights at these events, therefore black and yellow represent dance music correctly.
From this pie chart above I have found out that within my target audience age group and gender wise that dance music is the most popular genre of music. This might have been a coincidence as I feel like within my target audience there most popular genre of music is more spread out, there is not a most popular genre of music in my opinion. Therefore since dance music by my results is the most popular genre of music, I will keep this as my genre of music for my magazine, although it will not just be dance, i will have other sub-genres such as house, trap and dubstep. The reason for this is because with having a wider genre taste, it will appeal to more people.
From this pie chart above I have found out that a lot of my target audience would equally like to see Baauer, Knife Party and Disclosure inside my magazine, the reason for this is that they are very popular at the moment with new releases and being big in what they are doing. Only one person said they want to see artist such as Borgore and Kona in my magazine so i will not be using them inside my magazine. Skrillex and Avicci were both the same and only one or two lower than the top choices so they will also be a possibility of using these two in my magazine.
From this pie chart above I have found out that a lot of the people I asked would like my magazine to have stories and articles about what the future holds. The reason for this is that my target audience age is normally always looking for the next big thing to come around, the next biggest song and artists. So within my magazine I will definitely try to include this in my magazine. Nearly equally said they will like to see an exclusive interview in my magazine, so I will most likely be using this inside my magazine. This time this was equal, people put they want to see other things inside, yet did not specify what. Therefore I can only presume that they will want to read about gossip etc.

Photoshop First Attempt
This image above is my first attempt on creating a front cover on photoshop. I only spent a short amount of time on this front cover, as you can probably tell this was my first go on photoshop. I will place the original image below so you can compare the differences. I have only added a few things such as the banner style and Masthead, i added these to get used to doing this for my real magazine as theses are essential on magazine front covers. I found this task manageable yet some of this task for example putting the Masthead behind the image, which I will do for my real magazine, I found difficult as I couldn't achieve this task so I had to ask Neil.
